INSPIRED

INSPIRED Psychology:Danced
Psychology:Danced

Ruth is one of Five choreographers who were INSPIRED by five psychological questions. The result is Psychology:Danced.
If someone cried out, would you help? If someone asked you to re
member three simple things, could you? If you saw a chessboard would yo
u know which were the b
lack squares? If you asked someone a question and they didn’t know
the answer, would you give them an electric shock? If you were acting normally would a psychiatrist think you were mad?
Narrated by Dr Peter Lovatt (as seen on Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two, The Graham Norton Show and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe), Psychology:Danced is a performance of dance and spoken word where psychological stories are brought to life with fresh, exciting, dynamic dance.

Go Go Gadget Dance!

The life of a dancer involves many skills. Not just dancing.
From the day you sew your first set of elastics on to your first pair of ballet shoes, you will develop a close relationship with needle and thread.
Extending often to the purchasing, or if your lucky, the gifting of a sewing machine.

And here I have been for days!, at the sewing machine that seems to intuitively know each fabric I place under it's foot, treats it with just enough torque and just enough care in it's straight line obsessive state. Joining swathes of delicate fabric to create another dancing costume.

25 metres of silk is the recommended amount for optimum fluidity when moving.

yes all of this fabric is going into one dress!

Radadaadaadadadadadadadada. contemplative radadadadadadada wait a minute, the tv is on, it distracts my attention momentarily. Our current Prime Minister delivers dark news.

This calls for drastic measures.
It is important that the right thoughts are infused into the making of a garment. One needs the right soundtrack to set the conditions for the creation of beauty.

TV off.

CD on.

Maneuvering my way tiptoed and carfull around silk and tuille to a soundtrack of Saint-Saens. His trills puncuated by the radatatatatatatatatatatatat which most probably is reverberating down to my neighbours in a low, menacing, repetative way. ;)
I wonder what they think is going on up here!

The Tortoise from Carnival of the animals begins it's satirical slow motion can can and I think of my sewing machine, inherited from Vera, who was a show girl, a proper Londoner who danced the can can for a living as a young woman. I see her smile and nod in approval. Our machine, in slow motion, picking up, piercing, grasping and sliding. Creating beauty. Our beautiful machine.

I have created a short work for Dance House to be performed by my contemporary classes at Go Dance, Theatre Royal on Thursday 27th January. There you will see the fruits of our labour.

ps. Nice fabric eh!?

Got the time?

Time, Space.
Ruth will be in residence at The Workroom Tramway from 15th - 27th Novemember.
Working with Musician Jon Kelihor as mentor, she will creatively and theoretically research time and rhythm in relation to physical expression and dance.

What is time? What causes it? What makes it slow in gravity or in motion? Does it actually exist?

Communicating hard academic facts in tandem with fundamental human emotions and deeply philisophical ponderings. All through playing with time and rhythm.
An informal sharing of new choreography will take place on Saturday 27th November at 3:30pm. The Workroom, Tramway. Invite only.

Company class.

Class will be open to advanced students and dance professionals on the following dates.
Friday 19th 11am - 12:30pm
Sunday 21st 10am - 11:30am
Wednesday 24th 11am - 12:30pm
Friday 26th 11am - 12:30pm

"The brown leaf, superfluous, fell
crazy-paved on the kinetic air
into the mind's abyss."

The first stanza from my late Grand Father's epic existential poem 'The Fall'.
The whole work will be appearing up here very soon. Well, as quick as my fingers can type it.

There is creativity in the bleakness of dark, wet, reflective Autumn.

It has been the busiest Autumn I can remember!

I was assistant Movement Director for Playback. Go here to see the whole story of this massive production. http://ankurproductions.org.uk/

I choreographed and co-ordinated 8 community dance groups to take part in The Commonwealth Games Flag Handover in George Square. Wonderful day it was too.
Glasgow Community Dance Theatre made a wonderful debut with all their daring falling and jumping. Class act. :)

Classes are thriving and bustling with enthsiasts old and new.
We are falling alot in classes and I've noticed alot more falling creeping into my choreography. I blame the season. Don't deny the pull of gravity. Embrace it.

Women of the inner sanctum

I open up, lock up, fix up and tape down,
climb, hammer and staple.
Sometimes batter, yank, kick and force.

I scrub up, pretty up, sweep up and smooth down,
sclim, light and focus.
Sometimes footer, fidget, finecky with a knack.

I warm up, tune up, pull up and roll down,
rise, hold and balance.
Sometimes wobble, repair, try again with more conviction.

I am in my element.

Laura, takes pictures of shoes in the most surprisingly enlightening way. She has a beautifully delicate and clear voice which is echoed in her movement. Delicate and clear. Always says something insightful at every session, I watch her alot, she inspires me endlessly. She has a new liking for falling.

Lucy, with a passion for Martha Graham, she writes alot, dances alot, treats us all to neat witisisms, often has me rolling about in laughter. Lucy is shy, yet given the right environment and stage, she is in command! She is Eva Peron!
Her stark precision in dance is deliberate, thought out, intelectual but above all, passionate, just like her words, just like her soul.

Vicky, shares the same birthday as me. Day, month and year! we just found that out last week. :) It explains our affinity. Vicky is beautiful. that's how to describe her, natural beauty coming from the inside and expressed on the outside, In dance and in life she is fluid, smooth, grounded, vivacious, connected, educated and brightly shining. The glue that bonds everyone together.

Claire, curly, bouncing lover of life, children and dance who would quite literally dance herself into bed every night of the week. Always smiling, she has a child like joy, she is all about harmony. Chatting to Claire can easily turn on to an hour long sort the world out fest where the minutes fly by. Time literally dissapears.

Amy, never stops. she's an up beat, come on folks, get up and dance, move your body motivational force. Amy sees sleep as defeat. She bakes cakes, I've heard they are rather good. Dancing makes Amy's whole body smile! especially when you throw on an old broadway tune! She'll charleston with me till the cai come hame!

I am getting to know some lovely people. A growing community of dance who have all moved me in some way. All danced in a way which has touched me.
Julie, Nicola, Aleksandra, Catherine, Guen, Linda, Teresa, Emma, Elisabetta, Anna and not forgetting the men! Robert, Dimitrious and Ellie.
Thank you for making classes a joy to lead.

It is our last week in the inner sanctum.

I predict a party
